Evelyn (Ev) Sommer, Black Mountain Rowing Club (BMRC) life member, and Australian Representative Rower Number 211 passed away peacefully on Saturday 28 February surrounded by family.
Ev's, pioneering women's rowing achievements were significant and unique. Apart from her determination as a competitor she was colourful, loud and extroverted.
Ev took up rowing aged 15 at Sydney Womens Rowing Club (now Abbotsford RC).
In 1967, aged 17, in year 11 at Burwood Girls High School, Ev won the first of her eight Interstate Rowing Championships in the bow seat of the NSW four. Ev was frequently the stroke in subsequent Interstate successes. Indeed, in 1971, aged 21, Evelyn stroked the women’s interstate lightweight (Victoria Cup) and open (ULVA trophy) races to victory on the same day - an unusual achievement shared with fellow crew member Judy Perry who was in the same boats.
Ev’s rowing prowess was such that she had the distinction of winning all of the then Interstate events over her career: lightweight and open sweep crews and the Nell Slatter Trophy for Interstate single sculls Championship. This was an analogous achievement to that of Peter Antonie in men’s events .
Ev represented Australia at World Rowing Championships in 1974 and 1978 as well as several Trans Tasman events. In 1974, the pair of Ev and Lydia Miladinovic raced in the first World Rowing Championships that included women’s races .
Ev moved to Canberra in 1985 and joined BMRC. She won many local events and several Masters Regatta Championships in BMRC colours, with her last being the Australian Masters Rowing Championships in 2013 on Lake Burley Griffin.
Ev rowed in multiple crews at the Head of the Yarra (HoY), and despite her gloried past achievements was still announcing that she wanted to win the HoY. When the club named its lighter weight 8 the "Evelyn Sommer" she was still dreaming of being a part of a winning BMRC crew notwithstanding her declining health.
Evelyn had a successful career as a nurse and midwife, and with partner David Bagnall, raised two wonderful children, Sophie and Chris. Sophie's two boys Lachlan and Henry talked to Grandma Ev on the phone and will remember Ev who was overjoyed to have grandchildren.
Ev was also famous for the various dogs that she had in her life starting with Trigger, who lost a leg when attacking a bus, Sixpence (the Sao eating Champion of Sydney Rowing Club), Penny (another three legged dog she adopted after it lost a leg in a rabbit trap) , Phoebe, and finally Charlie who is currently 15 years old and famously survived a near drowning experience with a two metre tall grey Kangaroo in Weston Park in 2014.
Ev and her dogs have always been a team. Their adventures and interactions with Ev's friends are legendary
We will all miss Evelyn and her exuberance and joie de vivre,
Thank you for adding a memory. It means a lot to comfort families and to keep the memory of Ev alive.

Dear Evelyn,
You were one of the old school nurses!
A "Call the Midwife" midwife!
You were a very dedicated and passionate midwife in every way.
You always champed for 'researched best care' for both mothers and babies, for their short and long term health.
As a team member you were the best!
A shift with you meant that all care was given to mothers, babies and families thoroughly and beautifully.
You were a great team member and a true joy to work with as you worked collaboratively and easily with all.
In true Evelyn fashion, you brought your own brand of humour to the job, and often said the things we were all thinking, which had us all in fits of laughter, often! You were a joy to work with!
The busiest of shifts were made that much easier and lighter by having you on the team.
Your true sense compassion was not limited to the mothers, babies and families, but generously to us midwives as well.
You always had time to listen even in the busiest of moments, whether it was on the ward running, or in the tea room with us all rushing through our meals, or on the way to the car, all late off shift as usual.
Your take on the world was always refreshing, insightful and humous, and left us all feeling that just little bit better!
It's a special midwife and nurse who has done so much for so many, and yet so humbly.
"Sister Evelyn" you have left the world in better place with not only your nursing care, but also to the colleagues who call you a friend, and we are all richer for having known you.
You will be dearly missed, and warmly remembered, always.
Much love to you Evelyn.
Robyn xx
Sending you David, Sophie, Christopher and family - our deepest sympathy at this sad time of Ev's passing.
With love from Katie and Terry

Ev and I met in 2002 when I started working as a midwife at Calvary Hospital,Canberra. She was definitely a mentor to me, me coming from a small country hospital with about 30 births a year to a big city hospital.Ev worked on the postnatal( mums and bubs) ward and was a lactation consultant, a role she excelled in.She was wonderful with the new mums, with her wicked sense of humour and her passion for the very best for her babies, she was one of the very best midwives that I had the pleasure to work with.I left Calvary to work at Winnunga Aboriginal Health Service at Narrabundah.Ev followed me there to work with the nurses as a community nurse.During that time in the late 2000's, Winnunga was recognised nationally as having the highest rates of vaccinations in young children in Australia.Ev was there and shared the credit.
She worked at Queanbeyan as a community nurse for a while and ended her career as a carer for a private nursing agency.
Ev was the fittest person of our age that I knew (I did see her row once!!).
We often walked the dogs on the ridge. She collected Clarice Cliff crockery. We always shared a teabag (she drank ridiculously weak white tea!!)
We stayed in regular contact over the years, she was my closest midwife friend and I miss her dearly.
