In Loving Memory of

Matt Fletcher

19th November 1982 - 26th December 2025

Our favourite husband, father, son, brother, cousin, project manager, soccer coach, and friend sadly passed away on Boxing Day.
Matt knew that the end was approaching and went out in style, with 18 months chock-full of caravanning, travel, new boats, new cars, many new toys and plenty of time with his family and friends.
What better way to celebrate his life than with a casual outdoor gathering in his new hometown of Cedar Creek.
Please help us to keep his memory alive by contributing to this page your stories and photos. It will serve as a wonderful memento of the varied aspects of his life.

Life Long Friends

Matt, I still can’t believe it. I still find myself going to send you a random messages or something from insta & having to catch myself. We were mates for almost 40 years & boy did we get up to some mischief. From seed pod fights (hitting seed pods at each other with tennis rackets) & breaking windows & street lights; filling tennis balls with petrol & bouncing them down the road towards oncoming cars; being chased out of Indooroopilly carpark by security for chasing each other on our mountain bikes; mud walking down the Brisbane River; hitting your old

The Slappers

I met Matt at GHD on my first day of work in early 2006. My department didn't have a desk for me, and some how I scored the empty desk next to him. We become friends instantly. We loved all the same hobbies and being in the out doors. I joined his volleyball team a few months later with Paul and Rachel. Soon after we started a new team called "The Slappers", Katie joined in also. Others faded out, but Matt and I stuck to it. Later Jackson joined us also. We played together untill his diagnosis and surgery. I

Matt and Katie, both working at GHD, were at the young professionals trivia night which Katie had organized.
Heather O’Keefe, knowing that both Matt and Katie liked the other but were too chicken to make the first move, locked us on the balcony of the pub together and told us to sort it out!

That guy from work

A very fun dude with lots of interesting stories to tell. We've had our fair share of shenanigans and I'll always remember fletch carrying a banana that I stashed into his backpack for a week, only realising it when it turned foul. A great colleague with a big and generous heart, who lived life the way he loved, and will be dearly missed.

Matt with the Volleyball Teams

I got to know Matt and Katie through my beach volleyball business. Katie stopped playing when the boys came along but Matt continued to play until his diagnosis. He was a very easy guy to chat with and we often swapped stories and photos of our cook ups in the smoker. Gone way too soon, rest easy mate!

The Doorey St Snake Catcher

When Matt and the family were living in Doorey st, he use to tell us about snakes that we would find in our yard. I found a big carpet python under my morning coffee chair and wasn’t quite sure what to do about it one morning. So I asked the only fella I knew that could help, Matt. He came straight over and much to my amazement, picked up the python and put it around his neck, like a scarf. He asked if I would like to put it on, I said “No way” but we took some photos and

An absolute LEGEND

I met Matty almost ten years ago through volleyball, when I joined his team, the Slappers, and we played together for many years until his diagnosis. From the very beginning, he was incredibly warm-hearted, full of energy, and always had incredible stories to tell. I honestly don’t think I’ve ever met anyone who was such an absolute legend, so welcoming, genuine, and truly happy, with a kind heart. The jokes, the shared stories and the camaraderie he created made those times truly unforgettable. He was the heart of the team ❤️ Matty had a real passion for staying fit and

Matt and the boys joined the Nettleton Brothers Corey and Lance and their families on the Sunshine Coast. This was just another day of adventure and fun that Matt, Corey and Lance had in the 38 years that they knew each other. A fond memory, amongst many that will not be forgotten, just like the man himself.

Work Shenanigans

Who knew that meeting you as one of your graduates in 2011 would evolve into a mateship that would span a lifetime. Working alongside you always made the days more enjoyable, whether it was sending each other inappropriate messages, listening to how ‘f-ed’ everything in the SEQ rail world was (I think this has been a daily since I met you! haha), or even being thrown under the bus! Let me explain. Working in rail requires a strong safety culture, so it was no surprise that Matt once held the esteemed position of Fire Safety Floor Warden. However, what was

Busted Hamstring and Soccer Advisor

First met Matt on a grassy area in the CBD across from where we worked when Katie and him had their eye on each other around 2006, and ever since it’s felt like I followed the Fletchers around Brisbane. Either by living near keperra, out here at Samford, through the soccer club or now at St Paul’s. Matt was my no-nonsense trusted advisor, especially when managing the soccer team. If you wanted a straight answer you got it without prejudice and I will miss that immensely. I also owe a mid-life hamstring rehab to Matt thanks to some pre-race ribbing

Fraser Island Trip

One of the fantastic holidays that the Fletcher and Stannard families have enjoyed together. Well before the diagnosis, Matt’s love of life and desire to live everyday to the fullest was inspirational. Of course on this particular trip that desire led us to running the beach near high tide in the dark, and hoping that we didn’t get bogged, swallowed by the surf and ultimately end up a cautionary tale on facebook. But we made it, only to do similar silly things again. It was a blast and would give anything to do it again with you one more time

Ran a half marathon

Fletch and Shannon ran their first and only ever half marathon - the Jetty to Jetty in Redcliffe, QLD. We did have a lot of after work jogging sessions and a lot more injuries, but we managed to finish without walking (which was always the goal!) with exactly the same time! Thanks to alphabetising the names, Fletch came first; I'll let you have this one mate.

K'gari camping

One of our favourite camping trips with the Fletchers 🫶 A beautiful, quick long weekend getaway to K'gari. When I think of Matt, I think of his strength, patience and leadership, and there were so many little moments that reflect this (like wrangling 5 energetic kids who were eager to explore!). So grateful to have these memories and many more xx

Pod shenanigans

We've been lucky to work closely with some cool people over the years in the rail team at TMR, and Matt was huge part of our landscape on and off from around 2010. The rail team has always been known for (other than our hard work and dedication of course) making a noise, having fun and playing pranks on each other. Whether it be giving each other jump-scare frights, sending emails from each other's unlocked computers, leaving chocolate wrappers all over each other's desks, we were always up to something. In the office, Matt was not one for wanting a

A trip south requires a stop in Gulgong

When Tom had the chance to travel with the Fletchers to Gulgong he could not have been more delighted. Not sure if the excitement was mostly about going to the farm, sleeping in the caravan or just hanging out with such a fun family, exemplified by teaching him it was ok to eat whipped cream direct from the can (among other delights I blame Matt for!). We love life with you guys.

December 2023 Christmas Party

We are terrible at taking work photos, they are few and far between, here's one from our Christmas party in December 2023 - roof top location - sausage sizzle, trivia and various games, cheap drinks and lots of laughs. We also had a cracker of a storm go over us on this occasion for additional entertainment and had to chase outdoor furniture around :) Matt loved a few beers, but didn't put his hand up for the karaoke sessions that followed to the wee hours - singing wasn't his thing perhaps?

Campfire Selfies

Scattered amongst endless amounts of internet memes Matt and I would often send each other “campfire selfies”. Like a cosy campfire at sunset Matt was always easy to be around. Miss you mate and forever glad I got to share a number of virtual campfires with you. We will definitely go for a family camp in the next life and get a photo of the same fire this time.

He liked sports cars too!

I remember the day that Anita and I first heard about Matt. Katie had not been ‘on a date’ for some time so of course I mentioned that I had heard that she had been out with someone and being of a nosey nature I asked her for details. We were driving in the car with Katie in the back seat when I asked the question and she replied, “Yes, I’m smitten” with a big smile on her face.
Nothing ever changed.

A catch up with mates

Sarah and Shannon went to catch up with Fletch for a few hours during one of his stays at Greenslopes. We had coffee and caught him up on all things work, and of course he wanted to know all of the goss first! He was really up beat about the upcoming Christmas break with the family and what the future may hold. He was then super excited once we got him onto the Uber Eats app as Greenslopes food really wasn't cutting it, especially after St Vincent's 'all day, on demand' style system. He was also keen for our silly
