Daryl’s story starts on 3 April 1926. Son to Harold Bunting and Ruby May Thompson, he spoke of his love for his mother, compassion for his father, and cherished childhood memories with his adored older sister, June. Daryl joined the Navy in his late teens, after being refused parental permission to join the Air Force. At 22, he fell in love and married his late wife, Betty Marie (nee Carson). His love for Betty became his life’s narrative. He changed career and became a builder. Daryl and Betty created a warm, welcoming home — open always to family and friends — and a place for his family of four children to grow. His two great passions were the scouting movement and golf — both becoming commitments of service and enduring friendships. During his 74 years of marriage to Betty, he saw sadness, loss, loyalty, love, compassion, great friendship, adventure — and immense joy. Together, they became grandparents. Now it’s our turn to honour him: authentic, generous of spirit, unwavering loyalty. True Blue.

Darryl Lionel .. known affectionately as DL .. always the uncle who was there as a support for me and my family as long as I can recall .. a great friend .. and my footy mate, even though opposing teams!
To me he embodied living the way we all aspire .. the values that are the heart and soul of the “True Blue Aussie” .. he demonstrated his principles thru being the good husband, good father, good friend, good family man, good neighbor .. and community support played a huge part in his life with his renowned Box Hill Golf Club contributions and scouting and other activities; I could not say a word against him .. he was obliging to the core, always there when needed and whilst tragedy struck as it does in life, he “sucked it up princess” and went on with it .. changes in the latter years he struggled with the understanding and the reality that they had come his way and it wasn’t a time that he particularly enjoyed; a wonderful fulfilled life however leaving us with his values and take on life as a legacy. Along with his beloved Betty, so many fond, special and lasting memories.
Love you Daryl .. Jool ..

A relative newcomer to Box Hill Golf Club (joined in November 2011), I had the honour to interview Daryl not long after they named ‘his room’. A well deserved and long lasting tribute to a man who loved Box Hill Golf Club, volunteering so many hours over so many decades and deserved every accolade that came his way. Sadly missed but will never be forgotten.
To celebrate the man he was, the life he led and lived, and the wit, warmth and friendship he shared with us.
A gathering for family and friends will be held on Sunday 31 August 2025 from 1–4pm at Box Hill Golf Club.
