Our favourite husband, father, son, brother, cousin, project manager, soccer coach, and friend sadly passed away on Boxing Day.
Matt knew that the end was approaching and went out in style, with 18 months chock-full of caravanning, travel, new boats, new cars, many new toys and plenty of time with his family and friends.
What better way to celebrate his life than with a casual outdoor gathering in his new hometown of Cedar Creek.
Please help us to keep his memory alive by contributing to this page your stories and photos. It will serve as a wonderful memento of the varied aspects of his life.
Thank you for adding a memory. It means a lot to comfort families and to keep the memory of Matt alive.

Matt, I still canât believe it. I still find myself going to send you a random messages or something from insta & having to catch myself. We were mates for almost 40 years & boy did we get up to some mischief. From seed pod fights (hitting seed pods at each other with tennis rackets) & breaking windows & street lights; filling tennis balls with petrol & bouncing them down the road towards oncoming cars; being chased out of Indooroopilly carpark by security for chasing each other on our mountain bikes; mud walking down the Brisbane River; hitting your old

In all those years we never had a single disagreement or fight & I think that just highlights how strong our friendship was. Iâll miss you mate & I know Iâll see you again one day. Paul
I met Matt at GHD on my first day of work in early 2006. My department didn't have a desk for me, and some how I scored the empty desk next to him. We become friends instantly. We loved all the same hobbies and being in the out doors. I joined his volleyball team a few months later with Paul and Rachel. Soon after we started a new team called "The Slappers", Katie joined in also. Others faded out, but Matt and I stuck to it. Later Jackson joined us also. I joined his volleyball team a few months later with Paul and Rachel. Soon after we started a new team called "The Slappers", Katie joined in also. Others faded out, but Matt and I stuck to it. Later Jackson joined us also. We played together untill his diagnosis and surgery. I was lucky enough to catch up with my mate for a couple of hours, once a week, for around 16 years. Matt was always hopefull to make a comeback. "The Slappers" name has been retired in his honour. You will be truly missed my friend.
Matt and Katie, both working at GHD, were at the young professionals trivia night which Katie had organized.
Heather OâKeefe, knowing that both Matt and Katie liked the other but were too chicken to make the first move, locked us on the balcony of the pub together and told us to sort it out!
A very fun dude with lots of interesting stories to tell. We've had our fair share of shenanigans and I'll always remember fletch carrying a banana that I stashed into his backpack for a week, only realising it when it turned foul. A great colleague with a big and generous heart, who lived life the way he loved, and will be dearly missed.
I got to know Matt and Katie through my beach volleyball business. Katie stopped playing when the boys came along but Matt continued to play until his diagnosis. He was a very easy guy to chat with and we often swapped stories and photos of our cook ups in the smoker. Gone way too soon, rest easy mate!
When Matt and the family were living in Doorey st, he use to tell us about snakes that we would find in our yard. I found a big carpet python under my morning coffee chair and wasnât quite sure what to do about it one morning. So I asked the only fella I knew that could help, Matt. He came straight over and much to my amazement, picked up the python and put it around his neck, like a scarf. He asked if I would like to put it on, I said âNo wayâ but we took some photos and

Thanks mate for being a great neighbour, we will miss you.
The Fletchers were and always will be part of the Doorey/ Duggan Street Family. Sending you all love â¤ď¸
We made the move from Keperra to Cedar Creek and into acreage living
The most patient man teaching my over excited and over confident 4 year old how to ride a motorbike
Years of being 5am gym buddies! Man did we whinge an have every excuse under the sun but we still managed to drag ourselves there every morning. Throw in some ridiculous gym challenges and alot of meal preps along the way.
I met Matty almost ten years ago through volleyball, when I joined his team, the Slappers, and we played together for many years until his diagnosis. From the very beginning, he was incredibly warm-hearted, full of energy, and always had incredible stories to tell. Matty had a real passion for staying fit and pushing himself, from crazy marathons and crossFit sessions to the spikes and dives on the volleyball court.
That enthusiasm for life and movement was so uniquely him.
I still canât believe it. You will be deeply missed Mate.
Many funny moments on the soccer field with under 6âs. From tying the girls hair into the girls hair into pony tails, to keeping the team running in the right direction to to subbing for crying childrenđ
Endless fun!!! Slackers chat from Matt, alyndall and I, full of gossiping about everything and giving each other shit. Many Slackers dinners at the pub đť
Greatest times!!! Will miss you Matt.
Matt and the boys joined the Nettleton Brothers Corey and Lance and their families on the Sunshine Coast. This was just another day of adventure and fun that Matt, Corey and Lance had in the 38 years that they knew each other. A fond memory, amongst many that will not be forgotten, just like the man himself.
Matt ran the half marathon at the Gold Coast Marathon with Lyndall (sorry Shannon!)
First ever tough mudder with gabby Was a hilarious day full of sweat, mud and laughs. Finished by the coldest and tastiest beer there ever was
Who knew that meeting you as one of your graduates in 2011 would evolve into a mateship that would span a lifetime. Working in rail requires a strong safety culture, so it was no surprise that Matt once held the esteemed position of Fire Safety Floor Warden. However, what was Mattâs first instinct upon hearing the fire alarm bells ringing? He went straight to the lifts, down to the ground floor and out along the street to a cafĂŠ to have a piccolo before anyone knew he had disappeared. This left his Deputy, me, a graduate at the time, to run the show. It should be pointed out that Matt was nominated floor warden as a laugh while he was on leave, and upon finding out about it, he objected to it very strongly.
Youâre really going to be missed Fletch, especially because the act of sending you a message and getting a near instant response with your advice or thought on something is no longer there.
Rest comfortably mate
First met Matt on a grassy area in the CBD across from where we worked when Katie and him had their eye on each other around 2006, and ever since itâs felt like I followed the Fletchers around Brisbane. Either by living near keperra, out here at Samford, through the soccer club or now at St Paulâs. Matt was my no-nonsense trusted advisor, especially when managing the soccer team. If you wanted a straight answer you got it without prejudice and I will miss that immensely. I also owe a mid-life hamstring rehab to Matt thanks to some pre-race ribbing

I also owe a mid-life hamstring rehab to Matt thanks to some pre-race ribbing during the Dadâs 100m sprint a few years back at Samford School Athletics. Matt ensured pre-race that there was going to be intense competition between us despite it being a âsocialâ event. So after giving me stick half way down the course, Matt and I could only laugh when I hobbled to the finish. Every now and then in the years to follow at the kids soccer practice, he would cheekily ask if my hamstring was going to hold up during drillsâŚ..
I was really looking forward to continuing to share stupid stories of adventures as the boys grew up, so will miss your wry smile and quick wit and solid soccer manager tips.
Thanks Matt for everything you did.
One of the fantastic holidays that the Fletcher and Stannard families have enjoyed together. Well before the diagnosis, Mattâs love of life and desire to live everyday to the fullest was inspirational. Of course on this particular trip that desire led us to running the beach near high tide in the dark, and hoping that we didnât get bogged, swallowed by the surf and ultimately end up a cautionary tale on facebook. But we made it, only to do similar silly things again. It was a blast and would give anything to do it again with you one more time

Fletch and Shannon ran their first and only ever half marathon - the Jetty to Jetty in Redcliffe, QLD. We did have a lot of after work jogging sessions and a lot more injuries, but we managed to finish without walking (which was always the goal!) with exactly the same time! Thanks to alphabetising the names, Fletch came first; I'll let you have this one mate.
Matt, always ready for some fun. Even if he has to dress up like a girl.
Enjoying a ride with Cam, Troy and Riley.
One of our favourite camping trips with the Fletchers 𫶠A beautiful, quick long weekend getaway to K'gari. When I think of Matt, I think of his strength, patience and leadership, and there were so many little moments that reflect this (like wrangling 5 energetic kids who were eager to explore!). So grateful to have these memories and many more xx
When your out at a quiet country pub and your looking for some excitement, you sometimes need to make your own fun. Matt loved having a laugh and taking the piss. The Boys will miss you Matt
I have been privilaged to go hunting with Matt, Matt and Justin for almost 20 years. We have been out on countless trips, these are always endless fun. Lots of early morning stalks and late nights around the camp fire. Two things Matt was really passionate about. Things wont be the same without you my friend
We've been lucky to work closely with some cool people over the years in the rail team at TMR, and Matt was huge part of our landscape on and off from around 2010. The rail team has always been known for (other than our hard work and dedication of course) making a noise, having fun and playing pranks on each other. Whether it be giving each other jump-scare frights, sending emails from each other's unlocked computers, leaving chocolate wrappers all over each other's desks, we were always up to something. Whether it be giving each other jump-scare frights, sending emails from each other's unlocked computers, leaving chocolate wrappers all over each other's desks, we were always up to something. In the office, Matt was not one for wanting a fuss on his Birthday. I'm pretty sure it wasn't even his birthday on this occasion, but all the more reason to make a spectacle of his desk. We did laboratory experiments in Flech's desk drawers with food - clinical observations on the degradation process of packaged and fresh food that literally lasted months at a time - we must have got close to needing to call bio-security. Luckily the rail team moved between offices/pods/divisions a lot, so some experiments necessarily had to come to an end. Fletch was known for never unpacking his office removal boxes. Why bother when the next move was surely not far away? There were always a couple of tatty old boxes on and around his desk with a multitude of destination stickers on them. Matt knew literally everyone - his networking coffee meets were notorious and a piccolo coffee in hand was part of his look. He was level-headed and calm, even in the most stressful work situations. His knowledge, experience and relationships within the rail industry has had significant input to the outcomes for rail that we have today in Qld. Matt will be missed dearly as colleague and friend, but will always be remembered so well by us all. Rest in peace, Matt.
When Tom had the chance to travel with the Fletchers to Gulgong he could not have been more delighted. Not sure if the excitement was mostly about going to the farm, sleeping in the caravan or just hanging out with such a fun family, exemplified by teaching him it was ok to eat whipped cream direct from the can (among other delights I blame Matt for!). We love life with you guys.
We are terrible at taking work photos, they are few and far between, here's one from our Christmas party in December 2023 - roof top location - sausage sizzle, trivia and various games, cheap drinks and lots of laughs. We also had a cracker of a storm go over us on this occasion for additional entertainment and had to chase outdoor furniture around :) Matt loved a few beers, but didn't put his hand up for the karaoke sessions that followed to the wee hours - singing wasn't his thing perhaps?
Scattered amongst endless amounts of internet memes Matt and I would often send each other âcampfire selfiesâ. Like a cosy campfire at sunset Matt was always easy to be around. Miss you mate and forever glad I got to share a number of virtual campfires with you. We will definitely go for a family camp in the next life and get a photo of the same fire this time.
I remember the day that Anita and I first heard about Matt. Katie had not been âon a dateâ for some time so of course I mentioned that I had heard that she had been out with someone and being of a nosey nature I asked her for details. We were driving in the car with Katie in the back seat when I asked the question and she replied, âYes, Iâm smittenâ with a big smile on her face.
Nothing ever changed.
The Boys, last catchup for the year. Early breakfast before everyone goes on holiday
What's posted in the boys group, stays in the boys group.. but these i can share. We all know Matt loved a beer. But only half as much as being able to post a selfie first on a friday with a beer in hand. Perks of working for the goverment i guess... We are going to mis these.
Matt, Katie, Cam and Will caught up with Lance, Sheryl, Logan and Charlie at their property in She Oaks, Victoria when they were down for the Avalon International Airshow, April 2025 đ

Matt and I shared many moments at work with the team and worked on some amazing big projects together. Matt collection of magazines at work and his collection of food in his draws were always talking point. Camping and families were also constant discussion in the team but for Me we also talked coaching - as my boys and girl were slightly older I had been coaching for some time before Matt started and i was a little bit passionate about football (soccer) . So we shared many Coaching stories and laughed at each others stories. Matt you will be missed you were kind, thoughtful, funny, intelligent and I loved working with you. âď¸ rest in peace you have left a lasting legacy and touched many people around you.
Our last camping trip together, out at Boonah. Nothing like 4 mates sitting together around a camp fire reminiscing about the past
Sarah and Shannon went to catch up with Fletch for a few hours during one of his stays at Greenslopes. We had coffee and caught him up on all things work, and of course he wanted to know all of the goss first! He was really up beat about the upcoming Christmas break with the family and what the future may hold. He was then super excited once we got him onto the Uber Eats app as Greenslopes food really wasn't cutting it, especially after St Vincent's 'all day, on demand' style system. Matt, working with you on and off for fifteen years you taught me so much; about the rail network, that it was OK to say bullshit out loud over a Ministerial, and what food would last the longest in a drawer. You will be sorely missed. I was very sorry not to be able to be at the memorial.

Fletch, learning the bizarre world of major rail projects wouldnât have been the same without you. Thank you for always being so generous with your time and knowledge, and so infectiously positive even in the face of adversity. It was so nice to have had some chats over Messenger after I moved to NZ, and youâll never know how much it made my day to have some contact with home. Iâll miss you, mate.

Matt, mate, the SEQ rail network wonât be the same without you there to critique every detail. From now on, every train will feel late to me. Weâve worked together on and off since around 2009, and I can absolutely say the days we shared at CRR were the best of my working lifeâthe coffees, the chats (including those outside of work), and especially the laughs. Great times! Most of all, youâve been a great friend, and Iâm going to miss you sorely.

Matt you are one of the good ones and gone far too early. Thank you for the time and knowledge you shared with me, and for being a bloody excellent project manager and all round great bloke. Rest now and enjoy a beer up there.
Rest in peace, Matt. A gentle man. A great father. An all round top bloke. Good at drinking beer too.
Thank you for your message. It means a lot to comfort families and to keep the memory of Matt alive.
Though far too early, it's not a surprise
We've had time to plan for our Matt's demise
He wouldn't want stuffy, formal or sad
A relaxed celebration is what's to be had
So come with your stories, both funny and kind
And help us keep Matt in the front of our minds
Dress comfortably and casually; no need for black or formal. We will be mostly outside (weather permitting). The venue will be all at ground level so no need to worry about ascending the stairs.
For your comfort, please bring a hat!
UPDATE: PLEASE CARPOOL IF POSSIBLE AND ARRIVE A LITTLE EARLY AND CONSIDER THE NEIGHBOURS WHEN PARKING.
