Born in South Africa and lovingly adopted by Ray and Kay Stokes, Terry moved to Australia at 7 years old.
Growing up in St Ives, Sydney, he took his first degree from Macquarie University before completing a PhD at the University of Melbourne. He then enjoyed a career as an academic and later an academic administrator and regulator. In these roles he moved between cities including Geelong, Wollongong, Rockhampton, Canberra, Melbourne and Wellington. Through most of this period he owned a home in the Melbourne suburb of St Kilda.
Upon retirement, with typical eccentricity, he decided to move to Tasmania. Initially he considered building on land provided by the Tasmanian Land Conservancy, a charity to which he remained committed. Ultimately he acquired and moved to a very old cottage in Hobart for his last 15 years.
Terence is loved by family and friends alike. He will be missed and always remembered. We encourage you to help keep his story alive by sharing a memory or reflection.
Thank you for adding a memory. It means a lot to comfort families and to keep the memory of Terry alive.

Rhonda and I were deeply saddened to learn of the recent passing of Terry Stokes.
In 2008, under Terry's direction as Regulator, I had the privilege of serving as speaker and consultant to university and TAFE leaders throughout Victoria and New South Wales. He arranged and curated the experience. It left a lasting impression as we reflect on it as one the highlights of our professional careers.
Gracious, warm, fun and exciting to be with -- especially after hours in St. Kilda -- we will always remember him as a true friend and ambassador of Australia.
Heartfelt condolescences to family, colleagues and friends.

Terry was a wonderful member of the staff of the STS Department at the University of Wollongong when I was Head of Department. He had great intelligence, curiosity and wisdom, mixed with a lot of humour and integrity. Thanks to Terry for all he did whilst in that Department, and congratulations to him on his subsequent well deserved career advancement. He made a big contribution, and he leaves a big gap. Vale Terry.
